The True Bias Ogden Cami is a pattern I’ve had in my collection for years now and it continues to be a staple that I regularly sew. I hadn’t made one in a while, but I had two perfectly sized remnants of fabrics and decided to assembly line sew a set of two.
Choosing fabric + sizing
I’ve made at least 5 or 6 different ogden camis over the years in a variety of fabrics and found that its pretty versatile. I’ve found that its a great use of double gauze especially if you’re wanting to make a light summery cami. For this set of camis I had a cotton poplin and a silk. The poplin is leftover from my Peppermint Wrap Top and a great summer fabric – perfect for this pattern. The silk creates a more elegant, drapey structure to the top. Both are perfect for layering for making a layering piece – which is how I’ll most often wear it.
I am typically a 0 or 2 and I make a size 2 in the Ogden Cami. The only adjustment that I made is lengthening the straps by about 1/2″. I still feel like there are a few fit issues with the way that the neckline lays on me. My hunch is that it’s because either the lack of darts OR I need to size up and do an SBA. I haven’t played around with these adjustments yet, but I plan to the next time I make this pattern.
Sewing the True Bias Ogden Cami
This pattern is so easy to sew. I finished cutting and sewing both of my camis within an evening. The neckline is finished with a facing, which is the most time consuming part of the top, but also one of the easiest ways to finish a v-neck in my opinion. It’s a simple pullover cami so there are no closures or zips to work with.
The simple structure and design also means its really easy to hack. You could lengthen the cami into a dress for a cute slip dress. You could also length the facing to make the cami fully lined – or omit the facing altogether and use a bias binding instead. There are so many opportunities to get creative!
Final thoughts
Overall, I love this pattern and how easy it is to make despite a few issues with the neckline fit. Living in the Bay Area, I’m always looking for layering pieces and the Ogden Cami is perfect for that. Another bonus – it comes in kids sizes so you could make it for the little ones in your life.
