Pattern Review: Merchant and Mills Camber Set

11.22.2020

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen a few of my Merchant and Mills Camber Set tops & dresses by now. It’s definitely in my top 5 for patterns that I make over and over again. I’ve made both the dress and the top multiple times and I find that the simple, classic design is perfect for every day wear.

Choosing the fabric

The great part about this pattern is that the A-line silhouette is very accepting of a wide range of fabrics. The pattern is designed for wovens, and I would definitely recommend sticking within that guideline. But besides that, you have a lot of options. If you want a more structured look, you can use cotton poplin, linen, chambray, twill, or even corduroy. If you prefer something a little more feminine or flowy, you could use a woven rayon or silk. I’ve made versions across the spectrum. For example, this silk version for a rehearsal dinner (with an added side slit).

And I’ve even made one out of quilting cotton!

Pattern & sizing

If this is your first time making a Merchant and Mills pattern, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. In my experience, Merchant and Mills patterns are top of the line quality when it comes to drafting and instructions. They make the kind of patterns where everything just matches up perfectly and you never have to wonder “hmm…did I do this wrong? why aren’t these seams matching up?”

In terms of sizing, the fit of this pattern is on the boxy side. However, the shoulders are a little bit more narrow and fitted, so I wouldn’t recommend sizing down. If you are trying to avoid the boxy look, you might just want to take in the side seams a little in the waist – or just choose a more drapey fabric.

Making the Merchant and Mills Camber Set

The Camber Set is a great pattern for beginners. The most advanced techniques used are: bust darts and constructing a yoke. The yoke construction (per the instructions) does not use the burrito method, but you still get a clean finish on the inside. If these techniques are new to you, this is a great pattern to learn them – especially if you chose a fabric that isn’t slippery or difficult to work with. If you’ve mastered these concepts, this will be a super quick sew. I can whip these out in less than 3 hours now!

This is a really easy pattern to hack and customize. Because the drafting is so good, it make a great base for putting your own personal touches on the pattern.

My final thoughts on the Merchant and Mills Camber Set

The Camber Set has grown to be one of my favorite patterns over the years. I love a pattern that has the versatility to fill many gaps across my wardrobe. Whether you’re looking for a classic linen top you can wear regularly, or a nice a-line for a special occasion, this pattern can definitely be your go to! Have you tried this pattern? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
