If you haven’t checked out peppermint magazines free sewing patterns, go check it out! They have a variety of free, simple sewing patterns from a few different pattern designers that you can download straight from their website. My recent favorite is the peppermint wrap top. It’s a simple, classic style that’s really easy to sew. I recently wore it to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West and I loved how the floral fabric I chose looked with the architectural background.
Fabric and sizing for the Peppermint Wrap Top
The pattern calls for a variety of woven fabrics and for my first version I went with a cotton poplin from Blackbird Fabrics. This fabric was perfect for the pattern because it’s got structure but its lightweight enough that the wrap and the ties don’t feel bulky at all. The floral pattern also made for a great summery look. I could also see a lighweight linen or double gauze being great for the pattern.
I wasn’t quite sure what size to choose because I’m kind of between a B & C. I ended up going with B because I figured I could just wrap the top a bit looser if needed. I have smaller shoulders and a small bust so it made more sense to size down.
Sewing the Peppermint Wrap Top
This top is a very easy pattern to sew. If you’re a beginner sewer this is a great place to start. I prefer it over other wrap top patterns, like the Sequence Blouse. I like that the ties go through a hole in the side the top instead of having a hidden tie on the inside. I feel like it makes it easier to adjust the top to fit each time I wear it.
The ties are not double sided, so it requires slightly less fabric than the sequence blouse. However, that means that the wrong side of your fabric may show when you tie the top. Any wrap top still requires more fabric than other tops with a simpler structure, but it is nice being able to save a few yards when you can.
I’m planning on sewing another version of the top and the only modification I’m considering is lengthening the sleeves. The sleeves are slightly shorter than 3/4 length. I am the kind of person who is always cold, so I’ll probably just extend them to full length next time.
Final thoughts
Overall, this pattern is going to be a new staple in my closet. I’m already looking through the wovens in my stash and planning another version. If you end up making the pattern and have some extra $$, In the Folds has a “Say Thanks” option on their site where you can donate a few dollars to thank them for the free patterns they provided. I highly recommend checking out the other free patterns offered if you haven’t already. Happy sewing!
