Everyone needs a timeless button up pattern that can be made again and again. For me, that pattern is the Grainline Studio Archer. It’s surprisingly easy for a pattern that has button bands, a collar, and sleeve plackets.
Choosing fabric + sizing
When choosing a fabric for the Archer pattern, you have a lot of options! My version is done in the crowded faces cotton lawn by Lady McElroy. I’m planning on making another version in a linen. I love the look of a linen or flannel button up worn as un-buttoned overshirt (like a shacket). I personally don’t love wearing or sewing with silks or satin-y fabrics, but technically they would work. I’ll probably stick with lawns, shirtings, and linens because they make tops that are nice modern classic wardrobe staples.
In my experience, Grainline Studio patterns are well drafted and consistent in their sizing (I also love the Grainline Willow). If you’ve sewn their patterns in the past, choosing a size should be simple. The size 0 matches my measurements closely, but I could definitely see myself sizing up to a 2 in the future. In terms of fit, the pattern is intended to be dartless and loose fitting. My body shape is not curvy at all, so this works okay on me. If you have a larger bust or a curvier shape, it probably makes sense to add a dart or do an FBA.
Sewing the Grainline Studio Archer
This pattern is surprisingly easily given some of the harder techniques it requires. It was one of the first few patterns that I had ever sewn back in 2016 and it felt challenging without being overwhelming. The most difficult part for me was the sleeve plackets. The collar stand is also a bit difficult to get perfect. I wish I had practiced on a muslin first.
But the great news is – Jen from Grainline Studio has amazingly detailed sew-alongs for the patterns with videos! These were super helpful for me as I went through the instructions.
Final thoughts
The longer that I sew, the more interested I am in patterns that will stand the test of time in my closet. The Grainline Studio Archer absolutely will be one of those patterns. I love the look of a clean, classic button up. Stay tuned for more versions!
