This quilted jacket is one of those projects that seemed like a great idea in my head and then steadily went downhill from there. The disappointment is partly on my choices and partly on the pattern itself. I loved the idea of an oversized silhouette and making a cozy “comforter” style jacket, but the color I chose just makes it feel very blah. The pattern itself also turned out to hard to interpret – I found the Tamarack much easier. As the weather in LA starts to get chillier, I will definitely wear this. But I wish I loved it more than I do.
Choosing a size + fabric
I typically wear between an XS/Small or somewhere between 0 and 4. This jacket is quite oversized by design, so I went with the smallest size offered (XS). I’m happy with this choice and I would recommend anyone in between sizes size down (unless you want even more of an oversized feel).
For fabric, I used a Kona quilting cotton for the outer layer, lining, and binding. I’m a huge fan of Kona quilting cotton, but less of a fan of the color I chose. It’s a bit “blah”. I used a cotton quilt batting, but a wool batting could be used to do a warmer version of the jacket.
Sewing the Viki Sews Cheryl Jacket
This pattern was just…not easy to read. If you’ve made a quilted jacket before you will probably have an easier time, but I wouldn’t really recommend this pattern as beginner friendly.
The pattern uses photos not line drawings. I tend to prefer line drawings anyways, but these photos were particularly rough because the example garment has the same color outer layer as the lining. It’s so difficult to tell which side of the garment is being referred to.
For the most part the photo issue wasn’t too much of a blocker, with the exception of trying to understand the welt pocket. I’ve made welt pockets before and I still had a nightmare-ish time trying to do this one. I ended up using youtube tutorials which made it way clearer. If I could go back I would add a patch pocket instead or just use a different tutorial from the start.
All of those issues being said, I do want to callout that I had no issues with the drafting of the pattern pieces.
Final thoughts
While I will wear this jacket, it’s just not my favorite. It’s very warm and cozy on a cold day, but the combination of the color + silhouette just aren’t working for me. Maybe I’ll dye it and that will address some of my feelings about it. Either way, unfortuantley this pattern isn’t a winner for me and I won’t be making it again.
