Friday Pattern Company Saltwater Slip Review

04.02.2022

Okay so I admittedly made this Saltwater slip dress months ago for a vacation and totally forgot to write and post about it! I haven’t worn it since my vacation to LA because bay area weather isn’t exactly slip dress friendly. But I love the dress so much it will definitely be coming with me on any warm weather excursions. I’ve been watching a lot of Daria lately, and hopefully my inspiration for this styling comes through 😁

Fabric and sizing

My Saltwater Slip is made of a sanded tencel twill. Aside from having a tendency to wrinkle, I think this fabric is perfect for the pattern. I wanted something a little dressier than a linen, but not as drape-y as a silk.

For sizing, I went with a small. I’ve made a few of Friday Pattern Companies other patterns and have found that if I’m between sizes I need to size up. The small fits perfectly! The pattern also comes with 2 different cup size options. I find that the fit is better than other slip dress patterns or tanks I’ve made. For example, the Ogden cami has some fit issues for me in the neckline, but I don’t have any of those issues with the Saltwater Slip.

Sewing the saltwater slip

Because the silhouette of this dress is so simple, it’s a super quick sew! This was my first time making adjustable straps with rings and sliders. I’m always slightly intimidated when hardware was involved, but its actually super easy. If you can handle the straps and the darts, the rest of the pattern is SO simple since there’s no sleeves, closures, ruffles, tiers, etc.
The pattern has two length options but I went with the shorter version because I didn’t have enough fabric for the long version. I am definitely going to try the longer one in the future because I love the side slits.

Final thoughts

I’m super stoked with how this dress came out! Not only is it a super easy pattern to make but it’s a great wardrobe staple. Even though I don’t often have warm enough weather to wear its on its own, it can also be a good layering piece with a sweater over or t-shirt underneath.
